About
Coins are one of the most beloved items to collect around the world. Here in Australia, while coin collecting has always been in fashion, it has never been as popular as it is now. It’s a great time to be an Aussie coin collector - every year there are dozens of new coins to collect across a range of themes.
Some people collect specific denominations, for example only Fifty Cent coins. Other people collect themes, like coins with a particular animal. Then there are folks who prefer to collect error coins. Everyone is drawn to something different.
It’s easy (and affordable) to start a collection with the interesting coins that we find in our change, and as a result it’s something we can all relate to. That’s why the Pirate Guide to Collecting Australian Coins book is focused on the coins in circulation – it’s where most people begin.
Our intention with this book is to help you feel the satisfaction of completing sets, enjoy the variety of different coin designs that Australia has had over the years, and also to help you spot anything unusual when comparing the photos here to the coins in your hand.
Why is it called the ‘Pirate Guide’?
Well, it started out as a treasure hunt for new coin collectors, to help them identify any special coins they found. There is a lot of information out there about coins, mintages, errors, etc, but we couldn’t find it all in one concise place. So, it ended up becoming a treasure hunt for us to gather all the most relevant information and present it as plainly as possible.
Being a fan of pirate movies our whole lives, it seemed appropriate to name it the ‘Pirate Guide’ since this book is designed like a map to help people find interesting coins.
This is the fifth edition of the Pirate Guide to Collecting Australian Coins, and we’ve made improvements so that it is easier to use and more comprehensive, combining new data with the classic coin information that has made the Pirate Guide so popular with collectors.
Coin Collecting Journey
As you complete one part of your collection, you’ll likely expand to other areas, such as errors and varieties or low mintage coins.
There are many different approaches for collecting Aussie coins, so this book has been written to help you find enough information to collect the coins that interest you.
