Q: Does the Pirate Guide include coin valuations?
One of the most popular questions from collectors is “what is this coin worth?”
Unfortunately it can be a tough question to answer, as it depends on the condition of the coin and other factors.
Most importantly, coin values are only what someone is prepared to pay – and that changes every day with some decimal coins.
So this book doesn’t try to give valuations as they would be out-of-date as soon as it is printed.
Q: Is PVC bad for coins?
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the most common type of plastic that is soft and pliable. PVC releases toxic chemicals (that ‘plastic smell’) which react with metals causing coins to tarnish or stick to the plastic. It’s not suitable for storage of your coin collection.
Also, leaving coins stacked together, in open air, or in open cardboard cases will cause them to tarnish as contaminants in the air will react with the metals in coins. There is also the risk of physical damage.
Q: How should I store my coins?
Coins need to be stored individually to minimise scratches and tarnishing. The best methods are placing the coins into clear acrylic coin capsules which can then be put into a box or display case, or into SAFLIPs® or Coretek coin flips and arranged in Mylar® sleeves in a PVC-free binder album.
Clear acrylic coin capsules are PVC-free and have excellent scratch resistance. SAFLIPs® and Coretek are double pocket coin flips made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is a stable, archival quality plastic commonly referred to as Mylar®.
Note: Most proof coin sets and some special collector coins are sealed in acrylic and are best left in their original casing. This way no air, oils and other contaminants will affect the coins.
